Your First Day

Cole Gregory Scanlan:

You came into the world at 11:40 am, Saturday, October 27, 2007. I was convinced you'd come on the 26th--and then we would have the trifecta: your mother's birthday on the 24th, mine on the 25th, and your's the 26th. The full moon was the 26th, and I thought I had it all figured out. Had I given it a little more thought, the effects of the full moon wouldn't have occurred until late in the evening. Katya's labor started around 1am on Saturday morning. For future reference, spicy food (we had Thai for dinner), a glass of wine, and a full moon are a winning combination to induce labor.

I helped deliver you. The midwife asked if I wanted to deliver you. I asked her if she had somewhere else she needed to be. Nevertheless, I did it. You may not appreciate it now, but when you have kids of your own, you'll understand that moment--that moment when you meet your child for the first time, and immediately feel an overwhelming love and sense of protection that you will never have with any other first introduction. You were beautiful. Most kids are squishy and bulldoggy when they first come into the world. Your features were natural. You are a handsome young man.

I've come to call you the summer storm. You are peaceful and observant, but when you are hungry or upset about a diaper, you are angry and upset immediately. But as quickly as you become upset, it's gone and you are happy, again. I can live with that. It's a lot how I am--long patience, then immediately angry, but it's gone as soon as it started. Learn to control your temper though. It'll serve you well to do so.

Regardless, your mother and I are so happy you are here. We prayed and prayed you would be safe and healthy. And thank God that you are.

Welcome to the family.
